Having your teeth whitened professionally is the fastest method, and will protect sensitive gums and tooth-root surfaces. Over the counter whitening products don’t offer the same care. It is always important to have an oral exam before the whitening process, to ensure your tooth discoloration is not the result of a dental condition in need of treatment. Also, be aware that it can be risky to have whitening solutions applied to your teeth by untrained personnel. If you have any questions about which whitening method is best for you, just talk to us!
Professional Whitening Methods
Our professional teeth whitening uses high-concentration bleaching gels which are not available over the counter.
- In-Office Whitening – The fastest technique with the most powerful whitening solutions. First, your gums and tooth-root surfaces are covered with a protective barrier for your safety. Then a thin plastic device called a retractor holds your lips and cheeks away from your teeth. A professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel is then applied. The gel is left on for an hour. When removed the results can be seen immediately.
- Take-Home Whitening – An effective method to whiten your teeth, although you play the greatest role in the results. Several weeks may be needed to achieve your desired level of whiteness. First, a mold of your teeth is created and two thin, flexible plastic mouth trays are custom made for you. You will fill the trays with whitening gel and position each tray over the top and bottom teeth. The trays are to be left in for roughly an hour.
Caring for your Whitened Smile
Whitening results last for different amounts of time to different types of people. Although, there are several methods to ensure that your whitening results will last as longs as possible. Maintaining heathy habits of brushing and flossing every day, and regular dental cleanings at the office are the first important steps. Foods and beverages that stain teeth such as red wine, tea, and coffee should be avoided. Smokers can even use your newly whitened teeth as a reason to quit. Along with these, minor touch ups at the dental office or at home can ensure your white smile will last for many years to come.
